Houston, TX - Free elections and private ballots have long been a fundamental right in America, however it has become very apparent to conservatives in Houston that union leaders want those rights revoked. Unions such as SEIU and AFL-CIO continue to press for federal legislation to implement union "card-check" rules that would reveal union voters' choices opening up union members to intimidation at the ballot box.

"This effort by the unions to take away the right to a private vote is shameless," said CCM Houston Chapter President, Debbie Roan. "The only explanation for wanting to mandate public ballots is so union bosses can strong arm the voters."

The union card check bill, named the Employee Free Choice Act, is organized labor's number one legislative priority on the federal level. The legislation would effectively remove the current protections afforded by private ballots and open up a worker to intimidation by union members, public pressure, and general voter disenfranchisement.

"The whole notion of organized labor forming unions came about to protect worker's rights," Roan said. "With the number of paying union members down over the years, it appears that they have reversed course on their fundamentals in order to increase their numbers, raise revenue, and support the liberal congressmen pushing this legislation. It's sickening."

The Employee Free Choice Act passed the House of Representatives in 2007, but fell just short of the required support in the Senate. With the union-supported Democrats hoping to gain seats this election cycle, the legislation will almost certainly be brought up again in the new congress. CCM is asking that you call Congressman Nick Lampson at 202-225-5951, Al Green at 202-225-7508, Sheila Jackson Lee at 202-225-3816 and Gene Green at 202-225-1688 and urge them NOT support the Employee Free Choice Act.
