CHAPTER NEWS & COMMENTS

May 26, 2009: The Denver Metro Chapter held its monthly meeting on Tuesday,
May 18. The Guest Speaker was John Harpole, who presented a very informative lecture on the future of energy in the United States. His basic theme was that it is unrealistic to expect solar and wind power to provide America's future energy needs.

Chapter President Don Garretson also announced that he had been informed that CCM's Washington office would be closing, and that there would no longer be national leadership for CCM. By a show of hands, the majority of those present at the meeting indicated that they wanted to carry on as a local organization. The Chapter Board will be meeting next week to examine our alternatives, and hopefully a plan for going forward will emanate from the June 16th Chapter meeting.

May 1, 2009: The special joint meeting dis- cussing The New Energy Policy was an unprecedented success last night. In coordination with the Independence Institute, the Denver Metro Chapter presented a panel discussion that presented an overwhelmingly convincing argument to continue the economical use of fossil fuels, especially natural gas, as we move forward into a more ecology-friendly environment. The speakers included economist Don Garretson CEO of Algena 44, LLC and CCM Chapter President; Don Shattuck of Zachary Engineering Corp.; Patty Limerick of the Center of the American West at Colorado University; and John Harpole, President of Mercator Energy. The moderator was Jon Caldara of the Independence Institute. Over 100 people attended the event, which was preceded by a brief reception.

April 16, 2009: Members of the Denver Metro Chapter participated in the Denver Tax Day Tea Party that took place at the State Capitol yesterday. They were part of a crowd that police estimated to exceed 5,000 concerned citizens who were protesting unprecedented deficit spending and the resulting tax impacts that it will have.

April 4, 2009: On Thursday, April 2, 2009 Colorado Governor Bill Ritter issued an Executive Order establishing government-wide transparency by 1/1/2010 using a publicly-accessible database that shows government spending data. The Colorado House Appropriations Committee, which had been scheduled to address a parallel transparency bill (HB-1288), postponed its scheduled April 3 Hearing on the Bill because of the Governor's order. The House Bill would provide more detailed data than what was called for in the Executive Order.
